Quick Facts

  • Claimed his first NHRA pro victory in October 2006, in only his fourth Funny Car event, at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
  • In 2006, his rookie season, he became the fastest and quickest Funny Car pilot on the planet (4.662 seconds, 333.66 mph), after posting national record passes in the season finale at Pomona, Calif. The top speed record still stands.
  • Collected his first career No. 1 Qualifier spot at Pomona, where he went to the finals.
  • Notched his first Funny Car round win in early October 2006 at Virginia Motorsports Park, after joining the Don Schumacher Racing Funny Car team in September.
  • Competed in a limited schedule of Top Fuel events in 2005, appearing in two quarterfinals (Las Vegas, Columbus) and one semifinal (Englishtown).
  • Was diagnosed with lymphoma, a form of cancer, in 2004; underwent six months of chemotherapy treatments, and is now cancer-free. His positive outlook during his ordeal led to his being named the NHRA Pacific Division Person of the Year in 2004.
  • Took home the 2003 NHRA Super Comp World Championship.
  • Banked more than 50 wins, including two Winternationals championships, at the Sportsman level. Instructed more than 6,000 students at Frank Hawley’s NHRA Drag Racing School in Pomona, Calif. Spent four years (1984–1988) as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.
  • As a 7-year-old, Beckman watched his future team owner Don Schumacher compete in Funny Car competition, fueling his desire to become a professional racer one day.
