Team Mopar(R) Driver Allen Johnson Earns Semis Finish at Englishtown
Team Mopar(R) NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock driver Allen Johnson made a strong run to the semifinals on Sunday, June 14, in the United Association NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.
After taking the provisional No. 1 Qualifier spot on Friday, Johnson wound up fifth after the final qualifying sessions and drew Mopar HEMI(R)-powered compatriot Larry Morgan in the opening round. Johnson knocked out Morgan with a 6.573/209.07 pass to Morgan’s 6.618/208.17 run. A.J. next defeated Kurt Johnson in the quarterfinals, avenging his own quarterfinals loss to Johnson last week at the NHRA Joliet event, posting a 6.601/209.17 run to K.J.’s 6.622/208.97 mark.
In the semifinals, Allen Johnson had the all-important lane choice in his match against current point leader Jeg Coughlin. However, Johnson’s Mopar/J&J Racing Dodge Stratus R/T quickly got out of the groove as Coughlin drove away for the win, ending A.J.’s hopes for his second win of the year and his first ever at Englishtown.
A number of Mopar-powered Pro Stock drivers joined Johnson and Morgan in Sunday eliminations. Rickie Jones, Johnny Gray, David Beckley and V. Gaines all qualified in the highly-competitive Pro Stock field, but all bowed out in the first round.
Johnson remains fifth in the NHRA Pro Stock point standings. Next up is the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, June 26–28. For more info on the NHRA, visit http://www.nhra.com.
